Conversua-ting [!]

Remember when I wrote about the very first Conversuasion series in September? Well, last night I attended the second one, this time as part of Social Media Week in Toronto.

Heard a bunch of good stuff from the following three rockstars:

It was great to hear words like hashtag and FourSquare as part of the lingo at the beginning of the night.

Some key takeaways in a friendly bulleted list :)

  • Marketing as a verb is dead. <- Do you agree?
  • Dre Labre said 80% of the work needs to be done 20% of the time <- Not sure how I feel about this one. Not sure if I even understand it… O_o
  • Fastest growing segment on Facebook is 35 year old women. <- I’m not sure why but I found that so funny.
  • To a hammer everything looks like a nail. < – Gain different perspectives. Learn things outside of your industry.
  • If you are interested, you are interesting. <- This was my fav quote of the night [!]
  • Explore the notion of accuracy through volume < – be prolific!
  • There is no winner in tea party. <- This was on the topic of women being less competitive than men. It’s just in their nature. Keep this in mind when thinking target markets.
  • Women value personal connections most. <-  Their Internet usage is quite different than that of men. Who are YOU targeting and HOW?
  • Women don’t take time for themselves a much as men because they feel like they’re being selfish… <- I’m not one of those, but I can see why this was a point Jill wanted to highlight in her presentation.
  • Her communication center is larger and active on both sides… <-  So thaaaaaaat’s why we talk so much… :D
  • She’s her own harshest critic. He competes with others. <- Again, with that competitive nature. Oh men. Women do get hard on themselves though, they are more responsible for putting pressure on themselves than anyone else. I’m curious to see if this will shift, and if so, what will it take to shift it?
  • Women tend to remember everything. <- I agree. Ladies?

A very interesting evening indeed and those cupcakes Trina’s mom makes…. uuuuugghhhh, I could never get enough. Just look!

My personal fav highlight of the night though was the first speaker – Jill Nikolyation – she is one fierce chica! Hearing her talk about the necessity of being obsessive compulsive about what’s next to stay on top of your game was violins and cellos to my ears… Probably because I think I’m totally obsessive compulsive about what’s next.. :D

I walked away from the evening with this thought:
To be successful and meaningful, you need to get really passionate about something. That way, when you say “I do this”, you can actually mean what you say when people ask you what you mean.
Good work  Ad Lounge. Good work.

    Hey Lava,

Great post. I think you misquoted Dré slightly. His quote was “80% of the work needs to be done within the first 20% of the timeline.” His reasoning behind this was to have that extra time to perfect, tweak and make the project / campaign / whatever you’re working on sparkle like a gem. I 100% agree with this approach, and will always think of Dré whenever I make up fake deadlines for my teams from now on. :)

Again – thanks for the posting. You rock, m’lady.
